Interstellar
With the imax re-release, the fomo was gonna get to me eventually so I HADDDDD to watch this (at home)…..
This is a film that showcases how time is truly our greatest strength, and greatest enemy.
Nolan’s work before and after Interstellar have often been praised for his brilliant work in capturing scale, whether it’s with the dark knight trilogy, dunkirk, and now Oppenheimer, and this too is given the same praise for obvious reasons but on this watch, I think that it’s real greatness lies with the smaller, more human moments. Now I don’t mean to reference myself but when I had first watched/reviewed dune 2, I said how sci-fi is a genre with such big grand, larger than life ideas but some at their core are about humanity and such, and there’s no better example of that than this film right here.
From beginning to end, the film juggles a number of huge, gargantuan ideas, theories, etc but by the end of it, we see and realize that at the core of everything, at the core of SPACE ANDDDD TIME is family. Maybe this is Nolan’s most intimate work for that exact reason, which is rather funny considering that a large part of the film takes place in space and the great beyond of our very world.
Nolan has and will continue on making these events and spectacles for us to see, he did just that last year but after this rewatch I do believe that interstellar is his crowning achievement and will continue to be that for the rest of his career. It’s an extreme feat to break the mold of what sci-fi is as it’s an incredibly expansive and broad genre that basically has no limits in what is and what can be, but what separates this from what has come out already and what will come out in the future is its humanity, and yes I know at this point I sound like a broken record but seriously, we might not be able to relate to going to outer fucken space butttt we may be able to relate to having a family, making sacrifices for our family, and sadly loss of time.
The most heartbreaking reality we will all inevitably face is the fact that time will run out, it will pass us by even when we’re stuck in a moment or a place in our lives, it’ll catch up to us, it’ll pass us and there’s nothing we can do about it and that’s the true brilliance in interstellar.
