Sicario
New steelbook arrived today and I couldn’t resist, immediately popped it open and you glorious masterpiece. I’ve rewatched this religiously for years and I loved every single aspect of it with it only increasing. Like every Villeneuve project it’s a technical juggernaut but Sicario manages to excel in its reservation as it harnesses that same real world darkness and ambiguity without the over dramatization for effect in something like Prisoners or Incendies, two films which I love and are astounding in their own right. Having shades of his preferred form of storytelling through this stress test surrounding the border and what the toll of attempting to make a real difference looks like. If you were going to say any group is unaffected after this it would be both US government and cartel which seem to be operating with the replacement mentality without a concern for the individual struggle, even Kate and Alejandro representing those people affected by this continued war are shells of themselves following everything while nothing has changed in the grand scheme.
Absolutely riveting stuff and I really do think this could be the directors best on any given day which really is just a testament to his catalog. Long live the neo-western, Denis Villeneuve and Rodger Deakins; Rest in peace Jóhann Jóhannsson.
