Sinners
@dhruvyboy and I are on a hot streak
Spoilers
100% PhD theses will be written on this movie. Blown away by the number of layers there were in this. I felt like I was getting so many movies in one. There’s the excitement of a clandestine party and the satisfaction of seeing the team being assembled. There are the two love stories, between the twins and their respective interests. There’s the music. The Blues, which makes way for rock, and Irish river dancing (and that one scene where the future and past colllide with rock, hip hop, African drumming. That pan from Sammy to the guy with the electric guitar was so sick, all of the different and derivative genres of music and dance showing up blew me away.) There’s the choice between music, dancing, and sin, and the church. There was the depiction of life for black people in the 1930s south, the institutions of sharecropping and church, the party as space for community and escape. And layered on top of all of this…is a fucking vampire movie. Just unreal creativity.
Cast was amazing. Michael B Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld (who nailed it), Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo (so good. great comic relief), and of course Miles Caton, who is 20!!! Insane voice and great job as the protagonist.
Ryan Coogler’s coming for Jordan Peele with this one.
