Superman
I’m at a loss for words. It’s been no secret how much I’ve been looking forward to this, but at the same time I was absolutely terrified I wouldn’t like it. But I had hope that Gunn would deliver, especially after his clear focus on creatively driven films that prioritised quality, and he absolutely did.
I may have some slight nitpicks, very minor stuff, but on the whole it’s everything I could’ve wanted. It’s refreshing to have a superhero film embrace the wacky side of comics whilst retaining the sincerity that allows us to truly connect with these characters and their stories.
And oh my this film is perfectly cast. I didn’t have many doubts about the casting prior, but seeing these actors embody these characters is brilliant. Hoult conveys so much hatred for Superman, Brosnahan brings agency to Lois and Corenswet truly embodies Superman like no other besides Reeve. They made me believe these were real people and that’s the highest praise I can give them.
On the whole, Gunn’s Superman is all I could’ve hoped for. It’s got heart but isn’t afraid to embrace the corny. I want to see more from this world, and I’m truly excited to see this vision for the DC Universe going forward, but for now I’m certainly happy with being able to view this in IMAX.
