Death Note
Even better on a rewatch. This Death Note is for those that think Light is a loser, and he was. He's an even bigger one here
One of the best satires I've seen. Death Note is completely funny on purpose, but all the while intense, critical and thrilling, with some really awesome filmmaking techniques.
If the Death Note landed in the U.S., we know damn well this is how it would go. A straight up recreation of the anime would be wicked boring and serve no purpose. THAT would be taking something and putting out a product strictly for profit. This is an auteur-like film
But Wingard takes this awesome opporunity to point the finger at all of the losers. He uses this Death Note concept to introduce debates of morality, harm, death, the use of news, the necessity of a police force and America as a whole
Maybe I'm overrating this a little bit? I don't care. The ultimate cult classic
