Fish
have just revisited this, after 3 years
putting this on was stupidly challenging for me - emotionally - in a few different ways, but I have to say: I still love this stupid thing
I was 17 when I got this made for my BTEC class, shit was inspired by all sorts of messy thoughts and concepts I wanted to explore- and goddamn man, not to toot my own horn but little egg me didn’t do half bad!
I remember how it took so many lunch breaks and hangouts for me and my 6th form bud — who plays ‘Seaweed Guy’ — to write up a “real movie plot” for me to base a script off of
I remember planning shoots with my scrappy pages of overly-drawn storyboards, having my parents drive me to the beach where I’d run into the water wearing that dumbass Fish costume, and just watching this over and over again so thankful to everybody who was willing to be involved
I didn’t realise how much of a collaborative effort this was, until it all came together. Even those who aren’t credited, like that one girl in my class who I got to be an obvious stand-in for a 3 or so second shot
I had tears in my eyes, when I watched this - along with all the other projects I’d worked on - and realised: I know my style. I finally GOT me.
I wanna make another FiSH, one day. Maybe I’m already in the process of doing so. Maybe there’s always gonna be a lil bit of FiSH, in everything I do. someone once said that, all filmmakers do is rework the same idea, maybe they were right
All I know is that I don’t wanna change anything about THIS movie. I don’t even want to put my new name in the credits. It’s a time capsule, and one I’m so happy I didn’t delete out of insecurity
it’s still up, on my YouTube, to watch
