had fun pointing out all the continuity consistent cum stains on my second watch
both showings I went to had a gay middle aged couple, who had no idea what this was
and holy shit, everything felt so connected this time. There’s still a good few shots in this I don’t understand yet, but I really think this might be Luca Guadagnino's first perfect film; he really nailed the… fuckin… “complex simplicity” he’s been doing, Idk
This was for sure a loving and sincere tribute to William S. Burroughs’ legacy. Like Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch, this adaptation didn’t feel at all as if it was a replacement for reading his work. This was just one of those adaptations like Under the Skin, or “Adaptation”, that more so aimed to adapt the essence of the source material and its author - and even though I still haven’t read a single one of Burroughs’ extended works in full - watching this makes me want to get my shit together and read everything he wrote.
the performances and directing here were extraordinary, and the writing and cinematography was fantastic in certain ways that weren’t too obvious to me on a first watch. As I implied earlier, this film is very simple, but it’s also layered in a way that might just have you really asking questions and trying to look deep into these characters. I just really felt this.
everybody’s gonna say this is the Kinds of Kindness to Challengers’ Poor Things, or Guadagnino’s Beau is Afraid, and… yeah, this is not about to connect with nearly as many people, but it’s still real asf
