Close

Heç biri dilinin ucuna gətirə bilmirdi dərdlərini. Leonunku dediyim kimi biləyinin ağrısı ilə göstərilir, Remininki isə mədə ağrısı.
Remi Neil Perry qədər özümə yaxın hiss etdiyim nadir obrazlardan biri oldu. Kaş Remi o sonu yaşamasa və daha yaxşı cəmiyyətə sahib olsaydı, ancaq bu son və vəziyyət mövcud sistemdə ən çox mümkün olan şeylərdən biridir. Remi o masada və həyətdə ağladığı an çox bərk qucaqlamaq istədim. Hələ Leo qəsdən ondan aralanıb yerdə yatanda dalınca gəlir yerə yatır və səhər Leo reaksiya verir deyə ağlayır. İçim parçalandı konkret.
Bu film yas, kədər, dostluq, qısnama və minority baxımından izləyəcəyiniz ən yaxşı filmlərdən biridir. Minority yazdım deyə önyarğılı olmayın filmin əsas pointi o deyil.

When I find a piece of myself in a film, that film becomes much more valuable to me. And this is one of those films. There are some films that you only want to share with the people closest to you, to watch together with them. I would say Close is exactly one of those films. A special film to be shared only with people who are special to me.
When it comes to analyzing the film, I would say it is one of the most realistic portrayals of its subject. We see the close friendship between two 12–13-year-old boys. This bond was very valuable to them before school. However, when school starts, their closeness begins to touch certain fragile nerves, and little by little, they start to drift apart and their relationship deteriorates. This shows how the ideologies imposed by society today can lead to harmful consequences. The pure connection they had is gradually shattered by Leo’s fear of the pressure imposed by society. If Leo had been more courageous, things could have ended very differently. Let me be clear—I have no intention of blaming Leo. Remi, on the other hand, because he is more sensitive and delicate, and most importantly because he does not submit to societal pressure, ends up facing that fate. His situation is not unfamiliar at all. Anyone who has been subjected to this kind of pressure at any point in their life can fully understand his position. If you do not want to adapt to the system, sometimes the only way out for a person is to leave that system.
There are a few small but meaningful details in the film that I find valuable. First of all, Leo crying after the cast is removed from his arm at the end… I interpret this as the end of pain and mourning. Then, in the flower field that follows, Leo looks back (just as he stayed behind when Remi ran ahead at the beginning of the film) and moves forward toward his future with firm steps, leaving his past behind. We see several times earlier in the film that Leo cannot accept his grief. He simply cannot cry. It is as if denial is still stuck somewhere in his mind. After he goes to Remi’s mother’s workplace and confesses (saying it was because of him, that it was his fault), although this deeply shakes Remi’s mother, she later reaches a moment of acceptance in the forest and embraces Leo. At that moment, we see that Leo accepts the grief and his tears finally flow freely.
Throughout the film, the characters’ pain is redirected and suppressed through different things. None of them can truly put their feelings into words. Leo’s pain is shown through the pain in his arm, while Remi’s is shown through stomach pain. In this sense, Remi felt very close to me. Because in my daily life, whenever I face a problem or feel bad, the first thing that happens is nausea and pain in my stomach—just like Remi. It is a very subtle indication of a psychosomatic reaction.
In one of the best anime films I’ve watched, Pompo: The Cinephile, there is a very powerful line:
“We love the films in which we find ourselves while watching.”
This is absolutely true. The people who bullied me in the past put me in a situation similar to Remi’s. But unlike Remi, for one reason or another, I survived and managed to reach where I am today. And if even a culture in the heart of Europe like Belgium can be like this, imagine ours. Our society has taken a form where even the smallest difference is seen as a threat. This is a very toxic behavior. They exclude people for these reasons and then use fake, insincere expressions afterward. The words and actions directed at Remi made me very angry throughout the film. That’s why I often avoid empathizing with those who bully others. I feel like doing so would be a betrayal to the person who was subjected to that oppression (when I try to understand the perspective of those who hurt me, I feel like I am betraying the younger version of myself). I don’t know when or if this feeling will ever pass. I also deeply felt the moment when Leo, the person Remi valued, distanced himself from him. Remi became one of the rare characters I felt as close to as Neil Perry. I wish Remi hadn’t experienced that ending and had lived in a better society, but unfortunately, this ending and situation are among the most possible outcomes in the current system. When Remi cried at the table and in the yard, I just wanted to hug him tightly. Especially that moment when Leo deliberately distances himself, sleeps on the ground, and Remi follows him and lies down next to him—then cries in the morning because of Leo’s reaction… that completely broke me.
This film is one of the best you can watch in terms of grief, sadness, friendship, oppression, and minority experience. And don’t be prejudiced just because I mentioned “minority”—that’s not the film’s main point.
