Nowhere
The pursuit of happiness.
Maybe not happiness. Pleasure? Gratification? Satisfaction? Yearning for contentment?
Nowhere could look like a lot of things to a lot of different people. Thanks largely to Araki's direction and approach to storytelling, we cover a lot of ground in 85 minutes. So many people could attach themselves to this movie, all in different ways. That's all art, yes, but I'd argue even moreso for the Teen Apocalypse Trilogy.
Nowhere to me, however, is the pursuit of something, anything, to ground us. Something to tie us down and keep us upright in a world constantly trying to knock you down. A person? A place? An ideal?
To me, Nowhere isnt just a movie, but the idea of floating aimlessly, trying desperately not to waste your life without connection and doing whatever you can to keep what connection you get. Nowhere is the want, maybe need for an anchor, the thing that keeps up going. Nowhere is sex, drugs, love, death, music, film, culture, youth, life...
Nowhere hit me so hard this rewatch, and I'm gonna have some major life readjusting thanks to this movie. Dark is a character that's so harrowingly similar to me that it's a shot in the arm. I wish I had more to say, I'm just tired and I have a lot of life stuff to think about now. I know it's cheesy to say Nowhere is more than just a movie, but I simply can't express it any other way.
Nowhere is me, and while I love this movie so incredibly dearly, that has to change.
