Superman
Humans want to be Gods. Gods want to be human. That is the most basic thing.
The two dudes I watched this with said they are gonna watch Man of Steel to cleanse themselves of what they just witnessed. That really sat with me.
Zack Snyder's (Christopher Nolan's) Man of Steel does not put enough emphasis on why Kal-El chooses to be Superman and Clark Kent. He was seen as a freak in school but he chooses to help the kids nonetheless. We not seeing a prior incident where he was taught not to harm anyone makes you believe that Kal-El is Superman. But no, Clark Kent is Superman. Snyder's Superman, to me, feels like how Bill (from Kill Bill) sees him. That line "Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. The clothes he wears with the big red S, is the blanket he was wrapped in when the Kents found him. They are his clothes. He puts on a costume to become Clark Kent. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent? He is weak, he is unsure of himself, he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique of the whole human race." I see Snyder's representation of Superman and feel "you are so stuck up in his origin you forget his upbringing". Even the one dedicated film you give Superman, you drag him in his past. You bring General Zod, you make Superman surrender. The second semi-dedicated film, is about the events of the first one. Which events, you ask? THE ALIEN ONES. Just reminders on reminders on reminders.
And the internet calling Henry Cavill a better Superman because he was bigger is also weird for me. Sure he was big, but he never saved no squirrels. You don't give hope to humanity by fighting the bad guys. You give hope to humanity by saving humans. Snyder's Superman would be so stuck up in battle, he wouldn't have time to ask if people in the affected buildings were okay.
Snyder's Superman is Superman because he is an alien god and it is in his nature to be good. Gunn's Superman is Superman because he grew up among humans, saw their worth and chooses to protect them. Gunn can make an action film about unhinged people, but I don't think Snyder will ever be capable of seeing Superman as one of us. Humans are wonderful beings and Snyder might never understand that fully.
I also love this suit.
Finally, one thing. I don't need you to drink the Kool-Aid. I need you to respect it.
