Yeah I can see why this film is so divisive.
This isn’t of the horror genre like Raw and Titane(that I loved), therefore it’s not the thrill ride you’re used to seeing from Julia Ducournau but it is still intense, dealing with grief and trauma and it’s a film that doesn’t only ask you to experience but also to think and feel.
Important things first, I was truly invested in the story, the movie kept adding plot points and it had my full undivided attention and I say this as someone with the attention span of a goldfish.
The performances were amazing and the film was beautiful too from an artistic perspective.
As far as the ending is concerned, right after finishing the movie I thought “I wish it was explained more” (funny cause I read reviews complaining that the last 4 minutes shouldn’t be in the movie). But then I thought about it for more than one minute and it made perfect sense. I’m really confused with reviews complaining that the ‘plot twist’ was predictable. To me, it didn’t seem that it was meant to be a plot twist in that sense. It didn’t seem like the movie wanted the viewer to be shocked, on the contrary, it seemed like it gradually wanted to give us hints before finally spoon feeding us in the last minutes of the film.
Overall, what is clear to me now is that from now on, I will be very excited every time Julia Ducournau releases a film and I can literally only say that about one other director.
Side note: The way I saw it, the relationship between Alpha and her brother serves as a contrast between a disturbing sibling relationship and a loving sibling relationship that her mom had with her brother.
