Aftersun
Words don’t do this film justice. I never want to watch Aftersun again and yet it hasn’t left my mind since I first saw it last year. I hate the feeling the film gives me but yet think it’s perfection.
There’s nothing else like Aftersun. It truly needs to be experienced. I feel completely empty both during and after the runtime. Soul-destroying but so tender. A constant sense of unease, consistent warning. The film was always going to end in a devastating manner the audience can do nothing to prevent that.
The impressive nature of Charlotte Wells’ debut won’t be topped by her again. She delivered her magnum opus with her first feature. Stunning direction. Score harrowing. Cinematography outstanding.
Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio phenomenal. Still don’t think anyone reached the heights of Mescal’s breathtaking performance last year. A true depiction of the effects of mental health and depression - how it is seen in everyday life. And Corio is clearly a bright young talent alongside.
