It’s just so fucking special. Essential viewing. I could write a dissertation on the film if I really wanted.
Calum’s a man who doesn’t have anything left to give and yet his daughter still idolises him - forgiving him on his bad days. Sophie is clearly striving for independence but isn’t there yet. The confidence drains from her as she realises her father won’t join her for karaoke. It’s just so painful to watch a blockage in communication unfold in front of the audience. Symbolised expertly with the shot of the two separated although together.
You’re always anxious, thanks in large part to Coates’ haunting score. And on a third viewing it’s just heartbreaking to see how broken Calum truly is. Several near misses or failed suicide attempts hint he’s on the brink but isn’t willing to have that be his daughter’s last memory of him. Instead leaving her with the memory of their holiday, video footage of the two together. Alongside mementos collected on the way - the rug, their photo and a postcard. Before letting himself become engulfed by his depression.
“I think it’s nice that we share the same sky” will be tattooed on me one day.
