The Dreamers
this is my 4th watch of this movie and it still holds a favorite spot of mine. I already loved it upon my first watch but this one I felt more dialed in than the previous three I’ve given to this film. The tinier details stood out more this watch, more than just where the story was going. Soundtrack, performances, and all those smaller details were way more noticeable this watch and it’s obvious that they carry the film to where it is.
This movie is incredibly genuine and stands out because of it. I’ve mentioned this before I think in a previous review but 95% of this movie is shot in an apartment but it never feels limited due to the space it’s given. I feel like the use of one apartment setting throughout the whole film actually helped it rather than hurt it. I feel like the use of such a small space keeps the viewer more confined so that they focus on the characters rather than the setting itself which is how this movie is supposed to be seen I suppose. as a result, it feels less like you’re watching a movie and more like you’re observing people over a period of time in their lives. I really enjoy movies where it’s more character focused than anything and this movie does a great job at that. all the conversations, arguments, trivia games that the characters have all flow and connect with each other which makes this film feel intimate in a way that few movies do.
performances are another huge carry in the film. Eva green plays a great role and it’s neat to know that this is considered her breakthrough role. very deserving. Michael Pitt and Louis garrel, amazing too. I think all 3 of them were amazing choices. all 3 of them had a perfect bond and chemistry in the movie that every interaction felt believable and not like it’s just in a movie. watching it again, I appreciated even more how much the movie’s emotional weight depends on their performances. there are big chunks of this movie where it heavily depends on just the three of them talking to each other and yet I never found myself losing interest because they’re performances are that good and engaging.
soundtrack also incredible. love the songs and the sounds that contribute to this movie. all of them were perfectly placed and helped create that sort of atmosphere that makes this movie what it is. with the use of sound and references to classic cinema, it makes this film feel nostalgic in a good way. It feels like a movie that’s made by people who actually enjoy film and this is pretty evident in many of the scenes.
again, mentioned this before, but I enjoy how this movie really revolves around cinema itself. Film isn’t just something that the three of them enjoy, but it’s something that the movie revolves around and is discussed heavily throughout the film. they use it as a language in a way to communicate with each other and learn more about what’s going on around them which is neat to see as many films don’t do that now a days. This film references many classical films and none of them ever seem forced and instead fit into whatever scene it is referenced in. I enjoyed how they used real movie references to show more about the characters and give you a chance to learn more about them.
What I appreciate after four watches is that the movie continues to reveal new things. Every rewatch I pick up something different and shift my view to something new, whether that be performance, dialogue, or the soundtrack. This movie still holds my attention after rewatching it four times and still continues to get better.
love this movie so much and I will be rewatching again soon
