Oldboy

The first time i watched this I had no clue it was based on Oedipus Rex. Now watching it for the second time and having read the play it totally makes sense. Oldboy is in many ways very different from its inspiration but I think the one largest thing it shares is its type of tragedy. Both are tragedies of epistemology - the tragedy lies not in the action, which was always inevitable, but in the knowing - where ignorance would have been blissful. This film is crazy good - talk about pity and fear. And I fear it might replace Baby Driver in the top four I’ll sleep on that (this film might be getting a mention in the personal statement)
