Obsession
Holy shit. I don't remember the last time I reacted so viscerally in a theater to a movie. Easily one of the best horror movies I've seen, and had my blood pressure the highest it's been from a movie in a long time.
I interpreted the movie as an allegory to the taking of ones consent to the point of taking away one's agency.
The shots throughout the movie were PHENOMENAL. The scene at the beginning where you see Bear's reflection in a small mirror in the crystal shop immediately let me know I was in for a treat. The way scenes were shot with Nikki as a silhouette were extremely creepy, and the scene where she 'confesses' and the only thing lit up were her eyes was especially hair raising.
The score was very good. There were many scenes were warm beautiful music was playing while insane shit was happening on the screen, and it really threw my head/emotions for a loop.
It was terrifying and downright reprehensible to see Bear's true nature. To see him still stick to the lie for his own self interests despite KNOWING he's taking away Nikki's agency was fucking crazy.
The scene where Bear calls the support line & the operator asks if he wants to speak with Nikki, only to hear Nikki's helpless screams? Oh my god. Genuinely bone chilling, and I'm getting shivers thinking about it right now.
The way Sarah & Ian both are opposites in how they approach Bear about Nikki was GENIUS. We see Ian take the stance that Bear is taking advantage of Nikki as she's in an altered state, and is defensive of Nikki later knowing he has a bit of a relationship with her. We see this, not long after a scene where we see Nikki almost controlling Bear with her obsession. In contrast, we see Sarah feel like Nikki is taking advantage of Bear, utilizing him as a crutch for whatever she's going through and not actually liking Bear. It's flipped straight on its head as we now know that Bear is ACTIVELY taking advantage of Nikki. It's so interesting to see this dynamic, and how it paints the pictures of Ian and Sarah's relationship with Bear.
Hailey and I both came to an agreement that this was a play on the male fulfillment fantasy, and how far a man's obsession and wants will go so far as to take someone's agency. It's sick and twisted to the point of non consensual control over an entire person's agency.
Inde Navarette fucking KILLS IT. Get ready to see her in just about everything (and rightfully so), because her performance here was some of the best I've ever seen.
Also, lowkey I'm so sorry but Bear lowkey looks a bit like Charlie Kirk
