Obsession
“Just because you chose this for her doesn’t make it less real.”
This might be one of the best written movies I have seen period.
On this go around, the sound design REALLY stuck out. The sound was the heart of the scares, emotions, and everything that happens on screen is held together by the sound. I noticed this this time around in 2 instances:
1. The jingle is different when a person is making a wish for the first time vs when they try to make another wish. This was apparent when Ian makes his wish, and at the end where Nikki makes her wish.
2. In Sarah’s brutal death, each time her head hits the brick/steering wheel, you hear the car horn go off each and every impact.
Shoutout to Hailey for pointing this out, but on this go around I noticed that Nikki is nodding yes as she’s sobbing while Bear dies in her arms, almost as if the real Nikki knows that the nightmare will be over soon. Such a cool detail that I WILL be pointing out to anyone I talk to about this movie.
Inde Navarette’s physical movements and facial expressions stole the whole fucking show. Her backwards like actions and jolting movements were extremely unsettling to see, and her facial expressions were SO terrifying. The scene where she’s watching Bear and starts sobbing makes my skin crawl even thinking about it. The way she contorted her face while she sobbed made her look almost inhuman.
Jayden pointed this out — A chance for Nikki’s to even reject Bear was taken away by his refusal to tell the truth, something he REFUSES to do until Sarah is killed. Not even after he actively KNOWS what he’s doing. Bear takes away Nikki’s agency before he even makes the wish, and refuses to give it back and gives in to his own twisted desires. This even holds true at the very end of the movie, the man is just about to tap out and throw up the meds he took before Nikki makes her wish and snaps him out of his actions.
What a fucking phenomenal ending. I’ve seen so many horror movies, actually movies IN GENERAL, that have a great premise but can’t stick the landing. This was fucking PERFECT.
I’m gonna be honest, I was a little scared going into my second viewing here because after my first viewing, I had nothing to pick apart about the movie that I didn’t like, and was worried that I was going to find something I didn’t like on my second viewing. I am happy to say that the opposite happened, I only found MORE to like.
This is an all fucking timer. I cannot wait to hear about this movie for years to come, and I cannot wait to see what else Curry Barker has in store and to see Inde in every movie moving forward.
