Lost Highway
Clicked for me this time around i get it now i understand it now. Great GRFS short audience conversation afterwards that really helped to contextualize this movie within Lynch’s other works and put the final pieces together for me, big shoutout to them and the Wealthy Theater.
I think that beyond just being able to actually piece together what is going on textually within this film this go around, what clicked for me is the idea of seeing this as the third part of a loose “trilogy” (for lack of a better term), thematically fitting in with Blue Velvet and Fire Walk With Me. BV looking at sexual violence from an outsider (or really a very voyeuristic) perspective, FWWM from the victims perspective, and LH from the perpetrators perspective. Further, if you take that Blue Velvet, “I don’t know if you’re a detective or a pervert” line as a sort of skeleton key to understanding how Lynch views his work and to a larger extent maybe even his audience, LH certainly feels like the pervert to FWWM’s detective. From that perspective, it’s fitting that this is the most purely frightening of Lynch’s works that I’ve seen so far.Great movie, super electric and deeply unsettling, so glad i could see it on the big screen.
