Dunkirk
“well done”
“all we did is survive”
“that’s enough”
there are so many beautiful moments in this film that get my choked up that make this the best war film ever made. the moments where everyone is cheering, or when someone goes out of their way to help someone else. you don’t get much detail about these characters and it works because every minor character detail you get is so impactful.
this is arguably his best looking movie with a thrilling and heart pounding score which is to be expected from a nolan film, and the set pieces my god. nolan’s use of practical effects make his films feel real. on top of all that is the non linear storytelling, in every nolan film he does it differently and it works every time, it keeps you locked in and constantly engaged. the one week following the soldiers on the beach, the one day following the civilian rescue boat, and the one hour following the fighter jets are woven together so well and makes for never a dull moment. his ambition and distinct style and determination are the reasons why he is my favorite filmmaker.
not to mention you’re getting another great cillian murphy performance, barry keoghan’s breakout role, tom hardy, tom glynn-carney before he was aegon ii, and so many other great performances.
