Obsession
the director def wished for his audience to be obsessed with this because it’s been days and i can’t get it out of my head.
it’s definitely a horror movie and all for the wrong reasons. it’s a horror movie because it’s reality. it’s every woman’s reality. as the movie progresses, we get to see who Bear really is as a person. a selfish and insecure man. and all he ever thought of was how he’d benefit from the situation even after realizing Nikki’s “love” was never real to begin with.
Nikki was just every other normal girl. a friend. a daughter. someone who dreamt of becoming a writer. someone with free will. until Bear takes that from her.
there are multiple scenes where the real Nikki appears for a split second when it happened when they’re both in bed Bear should’ve been convinced by then to back off (he can obviously tell Nikki wasn’t herself) + it icked me how he didn’t have the instinct to tell Nikki he’d rather sleep on the floor. he only decided on it after being weirded out by her actions.
when Nikki was crying in pain over losing control in her own body she politely asked Bear to kill her because no one should ever be put in that situation. instead of agreeing, Bear’s face lost fear and switched to dismay and even asked “what’s so bad about loving me?”. he was offended because he didn’t know why Nikki wasn’t grateful for being forced to love him. anything that concerns Nikki never once crossed his mind, he only focused on his own feelings.
it was also evident when he decided to contact the details from the box. initially he wanted to alter the wish not cancel because he wanted to retain Nikki’s feelings for him. he wanted to retain the reality he created even if it meant stealing someone’s free will. despite all the weird things and even after eating a piece of his cat, he still concluded that it’s better to have an alteration rather than nothing. how desperate and miserable can one person be?
i also had this thought when i first saw it (but i wanted a rewatch to confirm if my idea made sense and thank god it did), Nikki appears to be impersonating Sandy because the cat was one of the things Bear loved. wish Nikki concluded that if she started acting the same way Bear would learn to love her back.
1. wish Nikki camouflages in the dark while watching him sleep
2. she pees herself after Bear left for work
3. the scattered cat food and claiming she had a stomach bug
there are just so many details that hint how the story will go. the cat dying from the beginning with the scattered pills proves how unreliable Bear is to care for something (or someone). he barely grieved Sandy even wish Nikki treated Sandy better through the memorial. additionally, real Nikki refusing for Bear to pay the tab proves she saw him as a friend and refused to owe him anything.
Bear is the embodiment of a man who always tells you “I was supposed to”. all bark no bite. he’s an almost man. hell, he doesn’t even have the balls to shoot himself. and that leaves us with the horrific truth, Bear escaped taking accountability through overdose and left Nikki all alone to face the consequences of his actions. Nikki would have to also deal with the psychological aftermath of seeing the three corpses of the people she was close with.
men will literally obsess and fawn over you, but the moment they finally get you. they start to feel overwhelmed some will even find the nerve to cheat. oh how easy it is for a man to just drop a woman while she slowly questions herself for what she did wrong. i know i’ll probably have more additional notes but that’s all i’ve got for now. take away all the unnatural aspects of it and it would still be a horror film (it might even be more terrifying). expected to leave the theater in fear, not in tears but hands down def a good contender for my 2026 movies.
