After my previous viewing of coach carter I wanted to re-watch some of my other favourite sports movies. This was some sort of double feature with both tackling themes of racism and social prejudice. Of the two, I still prefer this. This masterpiece took on a very controversial and complex story and they utilised it. The direction kept the story on track and the writing paved the of the titans. The reason I don’t have a “favourite” character is because they are all great. I hadn’t seen this in so long, I forgot Ryan gosling was in this. His character was just so good and he had some of the best scenes of humour ever. I laughed so much at his and lastiks relationship with the segregated team. Julius had so much depth and his and Gary’s relationship was so strong that even his mum couldn’t force him back to previous prejudice. Every scene in the camp was entertaining and satisfying to a high point. Every scene conveyed the story with every line of dialogue. Herman boones’s speech was utterly fascinating and remarkable.
“Coach Boone: This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting among ourselves today. This green field right here, painted red, bubblin' with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don't care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other. And maybe... I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men.”This film deals with racial prejudice, inequality and loss. It deals with the sacrifices taken to create equality. The quote above does that perfectly. I could talk about this film for hours. The fact that it’s based on a true story is criminal considering the fact it actually happened. But also extraordinary that they came a step closer to ending racism. The writing was just fantastic, I’m truly proud and ashamed of how many lines I remember from this. This is the quintessential pacing with perfect pacing, cinematography and of sheer brilliance.
