Rewatching franchises #1 - Star Wars: A new hope
I was so close to writing “I love you” and ending the review there. Those are the only words that can truly describe how I feel about this film. But they don’t capture the sheer greatness of this film. Then I thought to write “revolutionary,” which couldn’t be more true, but it shows appreciation, not love. So now I’ve turned to this. A review of possibly the most “important film ever.” Everything from the opening scene to the ceremony at the end was perfect. The opening title sequence is so iconic and unique which adds to the truly groundbreaking stance this film has in cinema. Iconic. This feels like a child’s imagination, new, different and totally wild. Even though this was way before my time, it was like I was in theatre/cinema for force awakens again - seeing my first Star Wars film on the big screen. Grand in scale, Grand in nature. The character dynamics were charming. Especially the relationship between Luke, Leia and Han. The shot on tatooine with Luke in front of this is one of my favourite scenes ever. You can see the effect loneliness has on him, longing for an adventure. The one he gets, winds up to be something much more.
When he meets R2-D2 and C-3PO (who by the way have wonderful chemistry) it feels like a step closer to the end of the Skywalker saga. The viewers at the time may not have thought much of it, but I meant a great deal. It still shocks me how George Lucas created this, but also made a set of prequels (which no where near as good) that had great lore. The Star Wars lore exceeds that of anything after or before it. This movie felt like living on Tatooine or Alderaan (pre-destruction) etc. The writing in this film is truly amazing and I could quote it for hours. The direction is exactly what you would need. The cinematography was beautiful and perfect. The score is so iconic and goes by the definition of Star Wars, truly transformative. This film transcends the meaning of a movie. This is cinema.
