“There are no two words in the English language more harmful than "good job.”💯
If someone told me that I would absolutely adore “whiplash.” I would have believed them. From every trailer, featurette and interview I knew I would love it. I was certain. this had been my most anticipated film for a few months (no where near as long as sarthi). I tried to imagine what it would be like but I was so far away from what it actually was. That’s one of the best things about this film, it’s unpredictable. When I think of music, I’ll think of this. When I think of “an acting masterclass” I’ll think of this. When I think of one of the best films ever, I’ll think of this. I haven’t been so riveted, so awe-struck after watching a film for a long time (excluding dune:part 2). This is the closest thing to perfection (it’s perfect) since I watched the godfather. Similar to that I would pay a lot of money to watch this for the first time again. Countless reviews, videos and people hyped this up to my them lofty expectations, and they were STILL exceeded. I’ll never forget the excitement I had when I was about to watch this.
to me the standout was the suspense. If it wasn’t for the enthralling suspense I wouldn’t be nearly as engaged with the story. The camera work was amazing and so unique. Chazelle’s style is one of the best ever. The quick switches with no cuts made it feel real and unreal at the same. The acting helped balance it out. Fletchers character arc was so conflicting and made it feel like his actions were justified, and he did his job. The drumming scenes were so immersive this story is truly tragic. The ending was probably one of the best ever and made it to me a great experience AND film. Without a doubt one of the best of the decade and quite possibly of all time. The grandeur of the set design, the artistic style and of course, the writing that I’m such a fanatic of. The dialogue - especially Terence fletchers was so unhinged it felt humorous. The double revenge at the end completed Neiman’s arc. Andrew Neiman was so layered and even the conflict in his character felt justified. His drive for success is one of the best uses of the “perfectionist” attitude. The use of language embodied the story. Miles tellers performance is severely overlooked and deserving of at least an Oscar nomination. And of course j.k Simmons, his talent in this is unmatched. That role was made for him. I can’t imagine any one else playing him that well. Somewhere through the middle he was my most hated character EVER but the ending completely messed me up. I genuinely think I deserved best picture (so did miles teller). The editing was also ingenious. I could have wrote so much more, but I’m entirely speechless
