my mom sat me down when i was 12 when introducing me to this and the only other time i have ever seen her so serious was when obama was giving a press conference about sandy hook
mookie's recommendations out here ruining my life because i'm thinking about leslie vernon for breakfast, lunch and dinner. the spike in deranged activity on my account is due to my very beloved friend. another real love letter to horror but with the added benefit of having a main character you can be insanely horny for.
i had a carrie phase when i roughly 6 or 7 years old. shockingly, i was a weird kid and carrie's plight was very relatable to me. i never really had connections with my classmates so i would come home every day and just watch carrie and started to understand that it was okay to not be like everyone else. in addition, it was also one of the first movies where i remember being curious about how a movie was actually made. i have such a vivid memory of watching the behind the scenes over and over again trying to comprehend it. i was very excited to tell my memaw about the figure 8 shot because i was so mind blown about that.
by far my favorite of romero's zombie films. while there's some incredible gore and a very good gorillaz sample, i love how the story isn't afraid to just stop and let you sit with the characters and their philosophies.
okay i know i'm the chris sarandon simp but i think about sarandon's performance as leon all the time. it leaves me speechless every time. it's so beautiful and adds to the grey feeling the entire movie has.
yeah so this is THE mookie rec that has turned my account into absolute chaos. not to be dramatic, but this movie has genuinely saved my life right now. at the time of writing, i've been in a very bad spiral for about a month and having a silly movie to watch and obsess over with my best friend is just,, yeah. i really do not like werewolf movies but this really does something for me. just the style and colors and ahhhh. i genuinely made the full commitment to start taking the steps to go to a school in scotland after i finish my bachelor's degree because i'm so infatuated with dog soldiers. and spoon. can't not mention him.
watched this for the first time in high school and told one of my friends i immediately went back and rewatched the scenes i loved and i have never felt more judgement than in that moment. i think about it at least once a week.
wonderfully amateurish and boring. i adored this as a kid and i'll always find it cozy and have a soft spot for it
the friday movies are admittedly not very good but they're the first movies that made me want to learn about making movies. i would obsess over the behind the scenes and track who worked on what and found so many random movies just from doing that.
this absolutely fucking sucks but i can't not laugh my ass off just thinking about some the scenes (that fuckass cowprint dress)
admittedly, i don't think i would typically put this on my favorites list but this was probably my first favorite movie. my memaw and i would watch this all the time and she's the reason that my love of film and horror has developed so much. any time i watch halloween or when the season comes, i always take the time to think of her.
i already really enjoyed this movie but after i saw it as apart of the joe bob spooktacular i was present for, this cemented itself as maybe my favorite halloween. if you can, PLEASE go see this in a theater with a rowdy crowd.
there's a very specific kind of movie i love that's focused on one person losing their mind while everyone else is completely unfazed. i have seen it dozens of times and it will work on me every single time. it's also in the extremely depressing comedy cinematic universe so i love it even more.
boring is the word i hear most often when i hear people talk about in a violent nature and i completely agree and think it's genius for it. i'm not going to say you're wrong if you think this sucks but this is really my kind thing. i love when filmmakers make a choice and fully commit with full confidence. this is one a few movies made by intense horror fans and you can really tell. i think the style is so clever and such a fun shake-up to the slasher sub genre which is something i really love but also think it can be so fucking boring.
nothing beats watching gay domestic vampire life with your father starting at the age of 4
i used to think i never wanted to be in love and then i watched it happened one night and it destroyed me. shovel_girl.mp4'd myself.
i had jackass on while mookie and i had a very serious, heart wrenching conversation about our friendship and how much it meant; meanwhile, in the background, steve-o is shoving firecrackers up his ass.
juice not having a single award nomination is the reason the academy's cars should be keyed forever. tupac??? omar epps??? ernest dickerson??? there are few words to describe how incredible they are and it has to be seen to be believed.
another extremely depressing comedy. i'll laugh till i cry every time i watch brain candy but i'll just sit and cry if i think about it for too long. i hate saying something is more relevant now but i'll just say the kids were ahead of their time.
still to this day, single scariest movie i have ever seen. i can not think about it without being so uncomfortable. besides the big scare, it's beautifully crafted and heart wrenching. i think it's incredible the way the script gives you just enough and there's an endless amount of ways to interpret the evidence.
david dastmalchian needs to be in everything. i fucking love everything going on already but i don't think this hits nearly as hard without the incredible work he does.
another fucked up lil comedy but this time it has donald sutherland doing the whole 'donald sutherland shows up for a single scene to steal it' and elliott gould who i am in love with.
there's a handful of movies on this list that are by far the ones that have scared me the most. i love everything about longlegs on its own but this genuinely freaked me out for a few days afterwards.
sat down and watched this for the first time when david lynch passed and nearly had an anxiety attack. this scared me so bad i had accidentally locked myself out of the house because being in my room was freaking me out too much.
i threw this on one night when i couldn't sleep since it's mostly just vibes and i didn't think about it anymore than that. i'm on the verge of sleep and all of a sudden in-a-gadda-da-vida starts playing so loud, i was fully convinced it was death coming for me. the fucked up part is the sound is so low for the first 90% then BOOM prog rock while the tooth fairy is no selling.
watched a handful of times with my grandpa when i was super young (between 2-5) and even then i could feel the weight of what i was watching
another mookie recommendation. this is such a cute homage to b-movies and is very cozy.
by far one of the most intense theater experiences of my life was seeing the scene where they're testing the bomb for the first time. i saw it twice with my dad and that first time, everyone walked back to their cars in silence because it felt like we hadn't seen anything like that before.
sam shepard is by far my favorite playwright of all time and when i watched this i was thinking how i loved this movie because it feels like a great sam shepard adaptation only to find out that he’s the one who wrote it! that really colored the way i saw the ending and travis' character going forward that it think tends to get lost with how great harry dean stanton is.
few movies contain as much joy in every frame. all the performances are perfectly heightened and all the set pieces are immediately iconic. it's tragic tim burton would never reach these heights ever again.
give me a genuinely funny movie with a great soundtrack and i will give you anything you want in return
tiktok brainrot will say i'm pretentious and i'll say harold lloyd didn't blow off a fucking finger because no one can sit still for twenty seconds anymore
another not mookie rec but i 100% blame my enthrallment with this franchise on them. there's no better word to describe the first saw than watchable. it's one of those movies i won't log since i'll just have it on in the background while doing anything.
fun fact: i watched this and immediately had one of the worst breakdowns of my life
i know all of the reviews say this so this is a pointless note but i have never said (out loud) how did they do that so much when watching a single film. i went and watched so many videos talking about how they did them and they are still so seamless.
this isn't a mookie rec per say but i did watch it because of them before we really became friends. i'm 100% not saying this is the best movie ever but when you're watching it, it really feels like it.
gun to my head, i can not tell you what the plot is but the effects and soundtrack are like crack to my brain edit: the movie is incredibly hot and erotic but it made me so fucking sad so i dunno what you should take away from that
just in general, maybe my favorite kind of movie is one that is extremely funny but also either deeply sad or fucked up. this truly rewired my brain in high school.
this was the movie to reinvigorate my love of film when i was about 12-13. i fell out of love with movies and especially horror but the atmosphere and soundtrack and performances were so incredibly strong that it pulled me back in. i’m still captivated by brandon lee and think about his performance so much. it’s a beautiful piece of work he left us with.
traumatized me as a kid but the first time i saw full frontal female nudity on screen so i came back quite a lot. linnea quigley thank you for your service.
i'm from texas, legally this has to be on the list or else i’ll be shot. one of the best shot movies of all time.
was a child obsessed with the sinking to the point where my mom took me to see this in 3d about 4 times and was taken to multiple titanic exhibits. i know it's cool to hate titanic or wtv but it's such a perfect blend of all the genres it takes on. genuinely perfect idccc
yet another extremely depressing and funny movie, are we sensing a pattern?? the first time i watched this was on my phone in my sophomore year english class and i immediately went home and watched on tv because i knew i had just seen something special. the closest things i had seen to trainspotting was t*******o but his movies feel like him flexing his cinematic knowledge. trainspotting just felt like a "pure" experience. it was the first time since i was a kid that i really cared about the actual filmmaking instead of just the acting and story. i will also argue that trainspotting has the single greatest opening needle drop in cinematic history, fight me!!
hey now being filmed on my route to work is my version of viggo breaking his toe
no joke, some of the most creative and magnetic shots ever. the barn scene alone left me shocked the first time i had seen it.
not to be dramatic but anyone who prefers any other willy wonka should be dropped into the middle of the pacific ocean
i feel like i’m trapped in being both withnail and marwood. i have the foresight of marwood to realize the situation i’m in and that things need to change but the self destruction and lack of desire to actually fix anything like withnail. it’s such a funny movie but you don’t get to escape reality. monty is one of the most tragic characters i have ever seen and the ending and narration implies marwood looking back on withnail. there’s no resolution - it just stops.
