Oldboy
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone.
Great movies are made up of great moments and you always have something to look forward to from scene 1 in Oldboy.
You go from one of the most electric openings ever to the 15 year montage and even before the last two set pieces in the last half hour which is like the greatest final 30 minutes ever, you have scenes like the hallway scene bridging the gap.
It has one of the best third act, plot twist, one take or just action scene in general, score (especially the opening but others too), and split diopter shot of all time. And then the rest is a revenge thriller / investigation movie made by Park Chan-wook so you have epic transitions, extreme images and all the rest.
After the penthouse scene my tongue was hurting and I realized I had been biting it for however many minutes. The snow ending is one of the all time endings in my eyes.
Even better on rewatch as there’s things that seemed odd on first watch the clarify with the knowledge of the reveal. Not sure if it’s better than The Handmaiden, but I definitely favourite this more right now because I’ve seen it more and understand it better.
