Bugonia
Reviewing Oscar Nominated Films #3/50
Bugonia
Nominated for:
Best Picture
Leading Actress - Emma Stone
Original Score - Jerskin Fendrix
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Emma Stone plays a manipulative, clever and cunning (andromedan?) pharmaceutical CEO. It is difficult to decide whether she is telling the truth or straight up lying in this role, and it physically hurts to be confused like this. In simple terms, her performance is fucking insane and out of human intellectual knowledge. Wish her the best in the upcoming Oscars along with the other well performed nominees.
When asked to make a soundtrack for Bugonia, director Yorgos Lanthimos didn't tell Jerskin Fendrix (film composer),the exact script or plot of the film but instead were given these three words: bees, basement, and space ship. Then Fendrix got to work and ending up creating a symphony of chaos. If someone only listened to the soundtrack without watching Bugonia, they would know the whole film by summary (Just kidding because that's not realistic.) But honestly this soundtrack really does the storytelling for the film within it's indepth orchestral complexity.
I have previously watched Save The Green Planet (2003), what Bugonia is adapted from. Not trying to say this lightly but the original is basically torture porn with a background story. Not a horrible film, in fact it's very well organized for how it started with it's original screenplay. Bugonia is a faithful remake, having most of the elements of it's predecessor but missing just a tiny bit. One obvious stand out reason about how Yorgos' remake differs from Joon-Hwan's is that the remake is very political and follows conspiracy, such as how medicinal companies launder people by selling them the sickness then the cure.
Overall, Bugonia is a very interesting and well-crafted film, it definitely had me glued to my seat when I first watched it in theaters.
(The review for One Battle After Another was more YouTube and Google support but since I'm a beginner in writing reviews I'm going to try my best writing them without internet help until I have watched all the Oscar Nominated films I need to review)
