Frankenstein
⊱ ۫ ׅ 🫀 “And for a moment, a brief, brief moment, the world and I were at peace” 𓂃 ₊ ⊹
Give me a whole damn month worth of work days to process what I’ve just witnessed.
I’m in NO way familiar with Guillermo del Toro’s work (this is only my second film by him and after having too high hopes for Pan’s Labyrinth I was actually VERY cautious going into this one) nor with the original Frankenstein story. I do own the book, but I didn’t manage to finish it before seeing this adaption. I mainly went in for the vibes and the STACKED cast (I’d do anything for my Austrian baddie Christoph Waltz).
What I can say, though, is that I cried… a lot. Maybe it’s just that I’m feeling extra close to my emotions lately but this broke me lowkey.
This film speaks volumes about mankind: our cruelty, our fear, and our obsession with appearances. It exposes how easily beauty blinds us and how quick we are to shut down what we don’t understand. Beneath the monstrous exterior lies a being of tenderness and purity. Yearning to be understood and loved. A creature destroyed not by its own nature, but by humanity’s inability to see beyond the surface. The primal urge to kill and control rather than understand anything that’s new and strange.
Even if no such creature — that we know of — walks among us, the world is still full of people who feel just as unseen, misunderstood, or unloved. Frankenstein becomes less and less about the “monster” when you think about it, it’s more about what it means to be human. That it’s never too late to change how we think, to forgive, to unlearn what the world has taught us growing up and to be (and yes, this might sound corny)
a kinder person.
