Inglourious Basterds
“i think this just might be my masterpiece”
Hiii! Guess who’s back rewatching this absolute madness 💔. Don’t ask me how it happened. Maybe it’s the chaos of it all, or maybe it’s because few things feel better than watching Nazis get scalped—especially when I’m living in a country where fascism is very much alive and almost 20% of voters are leaning far-right. </3
I didn’t plan to say much about it (Slight Foreshadowing: that didn’t last). But I do need to take a moment to get my thoughts and feelings in order.
If Tarantino excels at anything, it’s mastering the art of language. Known for his razor-sharp dialogue, he elevates his craft here—navigating multiple languages and historical settings without losing that signature rhythm and bite. He weaves violence with flair, delivering a revenge tale fuelled by both a deep passion for cinema and a raw, visceral anger.
And then there’s Christoph Waltz. That performance still knocks the air out of me. Hans Landa is one of the most chilling and magnetic characters I’ve ever seen on screen. Waltz owns every second he’s on. The smirk, the charm, the menace—it’s all terrifying and kind of brilliant.
The tone is wild. Spaghetti westerns meet war epic meets dark comedy, and somehow it works. Every scene feels deliberate. That bar scene? Still one of the tensest things I’ve ever watched. The opening? A masterclass in suspense. Tarantino plays with silence, music, and pacing like no one else.
I don’t usually like most German actors—I’ve been burned by way too many tired, out-of-touch local films funded by Rundfunk money. But Daniel Brühl has been one of my favourite actors for as long as I can remember (I was around 12 when I found out he was German and genuinely screamed). Luckily, He’s extremely based in real life 🙏
Inglourious Basterds might be Tarantino’s best (in my opinion). It’s violent, clever, and driven by a deep love of storytelling. The tension, the humor, the character work—everything lands. It’s pulp, but it’s also personal. A fantasy soaked in blood, cinema, and revenge. And I’ll probably watch it again next week.
