Parasite
This film always drains me emotionally every time I watch it. The three families are characterised so well that every death feels impactful in its own way. I feel like this film excels in the storyline, keeping the tension low but ongoing in the first half and then a sudden shift to an overwhelming final half. Such a great way to get the audience to root for the family by making the first half seem very light-hearted so that the final half seems even more intense.
I think this film is an excellent representation of the class division in Asia, despite the hyperbole and occasional stereotype. Like every other kid in my old school, I had a driver, a nanny and private tutors and having these privileges can easily spoil you so movies like these really does open your eyes. It’s genuinely insane the wage and the living conditions these people have to go through and live in. If they go through all that, only to be insulted and dehumanised by their boss, I understand the father’s anger.
