Loki
At long last, the legacy of the dashing deceitful demigod finally gets his moment in the spotlight. I've been sitting for about twenty minutes staring into various spaces of my room searching for the parts of my brain that were just obliterated in a smoothie blender from that final episode. On this day I figured what would help me end up writing this inevitable review would be to rewatch all (5) episodes from weeks past in one sitting then finishing it out with the finale. Turned out to be a blast actually. Taking more time to marinate these thoughts back into something cohesive might be smart but actually, fuck it, here it is.
While a familiar face, this mini series is nothing more foreign from Marvel’s "formula" with a slew of amazing individuals making the series with marvelous actors to back up this fresh concoction as well. I could easily be down for this expecting as such to be the case when that first trailer dropped. I'm thinking while all well and fair for its NEWness, I don't see myself recommending this over the lot to too many people. In it's contained inconsequential parting, not so metaphorically, from the previous amalgam that is Marvel's reputation, I don't think Loki (or at least this first season) will garner all the attention it deserves. It won't be perceived as valid enough in comparison to anything outside of Disney Marvel. Now, within Disney Marvel, it’s probably the best thing done in a while.
Writing is superb with many instances of genuinely clever banter and more of an edgier plot progression atmosphere on the basis of time traveling stories done countless times before. There is no piece of work without its faults though. Many of the lines still seep in to help explain something that is happening or just be a dumb quirky one liner. What seems to mesh all this over though is actors taking the very interwoven succinct nature of the script and fleshing it out even more than it already is with wonderful performances. By no means eluding to the writing being poor. While the exception of the filler/bottle episode made for the Twitter shippers, Lamentis. Which I'll barely touch on other than it does well in showcasing Sophia Di Martino's acting and handling of the amazing NEW Sylvie character; and if that's all the episode needed to do, that's fine by me.
A brief intermission from discussing the writing side of it all to expressing what many hold to be true of the roster brought on to this project are wildly outstanding and hopefully they all can continue to play their parts in other areas of Marvel's, not so much anymore, sacred flow of time. Marvel going meda? Hmmm interesting.
Relating this series to an established beloved TV show, Rick and Morty, is still something I'm leaning to the denial side of possibly based on bias to saying R&M is too unique. I think that while having many similar writers on board to influence the direction of this subject matter, it can only help the Loki series more than attributing it as a rip off. The parallels are obvious yet at the same time I'm more interested to see if the team behind Loki can sustain what it has created here in more seasons such as the way Harmon's animated sci-fi has done.
Regardless, when it comes to the highly effective elements like the varying spectacles of production design, refreshing yet chillingly catchy theme music in its score, or a main highlight being the masterful character development arc that this version of Tom Hiddleston's Loki takes from merely the first episode all up until the very end, convinces me that not all is lost for Marvel Studios just yet. What would be eluding to, laughable in Rocket Racoon's eyes, at least 12 percent of a plan handling an all out multiversing story of chaotic madness to come. Yes, this review was made possible today by many run on sentences, I need a nap, have a nice day.
