mid90s
If not one of my favorite movies of all time, (a bold statement, I know) for sure one of my favorite A24 produced films. Although mid90s is for a niche audience in its premise and also a love letter to the activity of skating by Jonah Hill growing up in the 90s, I still think this movie reaches a lot of ground in different emotions, values, and simplistic ways in which life works, that can resonate with anyone. While on the other side of the coin, yes, a character is in fact named Fuckshit.
Many of the actors having little to no experience before this project didn’t have much work to do for their roles which although doesn’t deserve the highest of honors, still counts for something in their natural charm and likability. I don’t personally skate, and don’t really intend to anytime soon, but I can envy and appreciate the culture that staking brings for big cities like LA.
The pacing of this movie is done beautifully in my opinion and hits all the marks of its below average runtime. I get that for some it could feel boring and pointless sometimes but I just see that as the calm/awkward moments that reflect how real life goes some times. The way it’s shot replicates the era of its setting which is a necessary touch for the movie to be as successful as it is and a lot of the filmography/cinematography is acutely unique in ways that I can’t think of another movie it could compare to (at least off the top of my head). Song selections really keep things upbeat and helps drive many of the scenes as a very present and defining quality to the film. I basically love everything about this movie and I never would have expected something like it to come from Jonah Hill, yet I’m all for it.
“Do you smoke?”
“Yeah, it’s just... these are a different brand.”
