Burning
I loved this movie when I first watched it, but many lovers of Burning often mention that the rewatch is what makes this movie a masterpiece. Therefore, upon further review, I do believe they’re right. This movie is just incredible and deserves all the praise.
The more I think and unpack this story in my mind. I love the complexity of its themes such as classism, social inequality and obsession. Lee Chang-dong takes these themes and directed a masterpiece of a slow burning thriller, which is not remotely boring for a second and keeps the viewer guessing. Initially it seems like an obvious story, after certain plot points are carried out. However, aspects add a sprinkle of uncertainty in us that keeps us consistently engaged. Especially with scenes that may not seem to follow a conventional thriller.
Finally, I do think that Steven Yeun potentially gives maybe his career best performance here. He’s so calm and calculative, he nails the role of Ben.
