The Substance
moiras spooky movie marathon 15/31 :)
i wanted to rewatch and rereview this film cuz my first review really did no justice for it 😭 (tbf i was still getting the hang of all this stuff)
this film is really just beautiful!!! past the gore and violence, there is this underlying feeling of sadness throughout the whole movie. the feeling of not being good enough. someone is always younger, way ahead of you.
its also filmed in a way where you feel what the main character is feeling. the anxiety, stress, pressure… everything is right in front of you— its almost as if it forces you to react as well.
and the conflict between sue and elisabeth is so well portrayed, self-sabotage and that turning into self-loathing. id describe it as falling into a deep pit. you cant stop the fall, all you can do is brace and blame yourself for not seeing it in the first place.
the casting is really well done as well!! i was just in awe at how well they managed to age up or age down the characters.
overall, great movie. maybe one of my favs for 2024 :)
