Avengers: Infinity WarMurphy10.0· April 27, 2018FollowSome thoughts on a second viewing: -In less than two years Disney has made me watch both Felicity and Elizabeth die on the big screen and that's just fucking too much-If I was like 10 when I watched this I would be traumatized I wonder how kids' parents are explaining it-Vision is born being made of Vibranium powered by an Infinity Stone why is he being thrown around like a ragdoll through all of this, he's much more powerful than that-Why do I always attract the most obnoxious theatergoers. I got a line of early-20's dudes hooting and hollering at every big thing in the most predictable fashion imaginable-Fuck Peter Quill-Drax and Mantis belong on an Odd Couple type sitcom-Can't believe the resolution to this whole thing is going to be Brie Larson how fitting-Why even have the whole Hulk problem if he's shown being ineffective against Thanos in the first place-The Wakanda music cue is great-The "Magic. More magic. Magic with a kick" might be my fave joke along with "WHY IS GAMORA?"-Fuck General Thunderbolt Ross whatever the hell-I love the feeling of actual legitimate danger, like constantly thinking "OK, he got that one but there's no way he's gonna get the next one, they'll save that for the next movie" and then you say that like 4 times and then he GETS THEM ALL-Can't believe this just rips off The Leftovers at least the MCU is acknowledging the best of prestige television-Vision's dead gray corpse with lifeless eyes is the saddest thing I've ever seen-It feels like they kind of blew their load with this storyline. You can't possibly get any bigger than this? They'll have to really rely on personal stories which they're not really known for because you can't get any more grand than all of reality and everything being snapped away. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith will always be the movie that made me think as a 9-year old: "Holy shit movies can be like this?" I thought that because I didn't think it was possible to put so much emotional heft in a movie and then to put it on screen. Avengers: Infinity War was never going to be anything other than an epic. Like they said in Birdman: "The cultural work done in the past by gods and epic sagas is now being done by laundry detergent commercials and comic strip characters". These people, shown to us developing for a decade now, are our epic heroes birthed from comic books, granted a new continuity that has managed to garner the undivided attention and unlimited box office dollars from millions across the world. Despite its meme status, this is the most ambitious crossover in history. So much so, that it's almost impossible to even judge it as a movie. 5 star films are often ones with rich new perspective, deep characterization, and an artistic signature that inspires conversation. While this isn't necessarily that, it's something to behold as its own thing, separate even from the 18 films that came before it. It would be easy to roll one's eyes at this movie, the whole franchise even, to blow it off and think well, the reason they're fine-tuned so well is because they're a product made to create repeat customers. While that may be a side-effect, I am not convinced that you can go on the Internet or a classroom or a movie theater, see the immense amount of passion and love people have for these characters and dismiss it as a brainwash. The people in this film are each their own. They are each reflective of different combinations of traits: ones we're proud we have, ones we're scared we have, and ones we aspire to someday have. To see all of these personalities collide, each with their own background, motivations, and yes, superpowers, is an epic thing to behold. This one, the supposed "culmination" takes all of that and turns it into the most satisfying film in years. I cried, I smiled, I was completely unable to think about anything else. Now I've heard your complaints, and they may be valid, but I wouldn't trade this emotion for anything. I don't understand why I'm the type of person to get so broken up over fictional characters, but I am. And I wouldn't trade feeling for not feeling any day. Somehow, they've become incredibly special to me. So, at least for the next year, I'll look forward to seeing them again. Even if that's exactly what Disney wants. You can keep the cynicism. I'll keep the Avengers.CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the appSee all Murphy's reviews for Avengers: Infinity War (9)First watch10.0April 26, 2018Rewatch 110.0April 27, 2018Rewatch 210.0May 2, 2018Rewatch 310.0May 25, 2018Rewatch 410.0January 3, 2019Rewatch 510.0April 25, 2019Rewatch 610.0August 12, 2020Rewatch 710.0March 6, 2021Rewatch 810.0March 16, 2023
