Phantom Thread
I was surprised at how much Phantom Thread keeps you engaged. The writing is top notch, and Daniel Day-Lewis gives an amazing (and presumably final) performance, giving a mix of precision and calmness along with being a total dick. The relationship that transpires between our main characters is subtle in its complexities, but blatantly obvious in others. I really didn't know what to expect, and this is definitely one of the most different and unique "romance" films that i've ever watched. Visually, the film is stunning as well. Although the movie is very self-contained in its setting, it still manages to create some downright gorgeous shots.
The ending, for me, was so conflicting. I'm not going to go into specific detail, but I genuinely don't know if I should feel good or bad about its outcome. In that regard, and many others, Phantom Thread is a fantastic experience. At some moments, it feels like the movie doesn't know which direction it wants to take. Luckily, the script is fantastic, along with the great performances that keep the tension and momentum going. Its left me feeling conflicted, but it's also such an engrossing experience.
Highly recommended.
