Phantom Thread
"kiss me my girl, before im sick." an extravagantly exquisite, luxurious, and sleek film. PTA instills an amazing insight and collage of scenes and cinematography through his sets and dialogues to drive the ideals of a hopeless perfectionist's love. every scene can just capture and share the beauty and perfection that Reynolds the dressmaker wants to pursue and kindle - and PTA incorporates that into every single scene of camera-work...utterly grand work. immensely grand.
the whole time you're waiting, for the big 'aha'...the grand climax within the film. but you realize its passed, and its been happening the whole time; and that seems to connect very strongly to the message and importance of the film. a woman is desperately trapped and threaded into the life of a graceful man who creates perfect dresses; giving the illusion that he himself is perfect. a very prevalent film of realizing and coming-to-terms with a toxic dynamic, while also addressing and curating the sensitivities, vulnerabilities, and softness of masculinity. with a grand conclusion of the woman, Alma being able to assert her dominance and stance within a doomed relationship by mirroring his manipulation and power. love can be cursed, but it requires exploitation for it to be employed.
the acting is wonderful, Daniel Day Lewis along with Vicky Krieps deliver something very powerful. the film is mainly dialogue driven and it ends up working so very well. the beauty of the film alone, in its lush and extravagant score is enough to draw you in and fall in love with a peculiar-dynamic of love.
