Interstellar
I think I am due to actually review this film fully in depth to actually explain why it is my number 1 film as of right now, so here we are.
Christopher Nolan's Interstellar isn't just one of my favorite films, it is my favorite film ever made, and will forever be in my mind as pure cinema. To me, it is hands down the most beautiful film ever put on screen. The visuals are jaw-dropping, from the way space is presented to the stunning realism of the black hole. Some of the shots are straight up breathtaking, the kind of images that stay in my mind forever, and for that I am grateful for.
Matthew McConaughey gives one of the most compelling performances I've ever seen. His emotional depth, specifically in the 'don't leave' scene and when Cooper receives the voice messages from his children, which actually brings me to tears every time i watch it. Anne Hathaway is also outstanding, bringing both strength and vulnerability to her role.
But it's also not just the visuals and the performances that gives this film the top spot, it's Nolan's vision. This film alone is the reason why he is one of my favorite directors of all time. The way he blends hard science with human emotion is perfect, and increasingly inspires me in my own journey towards filmmaking. It is the perfect mix of inspiration and personal storytelling.
Even though Interstellar is seen as one of the greatest films of all time by a lot of people, that is not the reason it's my favorite. That is one of the things I love about cinema, is that everyone has their own taste - some people may not connect with it the same way that I do. But for me, without anyone else's opinion swaying it, this is one of greatest films I've ever seen in the history of filmmaking and in the history of cinema. No other movie has ever moved me, inspired me and took me on a completely unique journey of emotions, and I doubt much ever will.
