Sentimental Value
So much heart in this
Deeply human movie. I felt myself saying “wow this is really real” at certain points just because of how honest everything felt. It was natural. It’s like watching real people. Which, is the point of a lot of movies, but something clicks here. Every actor is doing a phenomenal job. It’s hard to pinpoint favourites, Stellan, Renate, Inga and Elle are all excellent and really do have chemistry.
The movie itself seems pretty basic, but it really allows for some great, touching moments. The “it’s not a film about my mother” and many other cases really are great. It’s a film about bonding and learning among other things. Ive realized I won’t be able to make an exact description of any movie or pinpoint everything that was great to me. But I try my best to personalize and give my takes on these things.
As someone with separated parents I could understand some of the movie but my parents are both present in my life. I could only empathize with the sisters in this. Gustav, as much as you seem to maybe start to dislike him, never does anything to cross the boundary in my opinion. Like Rachel too. You’re introduced to her and expect to dislike her, but she’s very understanding and actually cares. Your first impression of people isn’t always right. These are real humans.
So yes, a movie with a lot of heart, with an ending I personally enjoy, not too over the top. Satisfying with bittersweet moments and incredible direction. It was sweet and moving.
