TÁR
The way this film slowly and subtly draws emotions out of you in its suggestion is a perfect parallel to the skill of its composer and how such a sensitivity with music can make you feel without a word spoken when executed at such a high standard.
On a rewatch I noticed so many slyly hidden details that you wouldn’t pickup on during a first viewing that make the whole experience feel far heavier by the time of its conclusion. The most impressive thing I was able to appreciate this time around however is just how masterful the usage of sound is. As our protagonist loses control, background noise piles up until we go from just her isolated speech and scenes where she’s losing sleep to the day to day noises of her house to the barrage of noise coming from the lives she can’t command that we as an audience are so used to. This perfectly places you in her shoes and demonstrates her emotional disconnect to the world or consequences to her actions, the persistence of guilt building inside of her and how perfection of an art form demands total dedication to that craft.
So glad this holds up to be as good if not better than when I last saw it. The performances are still incredible, especially Blanchett who steals every scene she’s in. How she didn’t win an Oscar for this will always be beyond me. The ending too feels like just as much of a satisfying and comedic triumph as it was on my initial watch.
Cannot recommend enough if you’ve never seen this before.
