Godzilla
Gareth Edwards’ perfect organism. I might be alone on this, but sometimes I prefer the anticipatory kinda thing that this film has going on, where you’re rarely exposed to the beasts in all their glory. I adore that suspense, so swiftly swept aside by some of those godforsaken Monsterverse sequels. This film stands to be the redemption of an iconic kaiju to instead become a sacrificial incarnation of our prejudices; a necessary evil or a force of nature that just about manages to sustain a wicked sense of humanity by being an unbiased destroyer. Some of the shots in here are so fucking good at capturing the civilian point of view, and I love how Edwards could not give two shits about the cinematic inconvenience of Godzilla’s gargantuan size. We’re deliberately sheltered from sitting in a front-row seat, instead seeing from human glimpses of smoke, debris, and chaos. I hope that there will be a day where people look back and appreciate Edwards’ vision.
