Godzilla
The score alone makes this worthy of 5 stars. An earthquaking edge-of-your-seat blockbuster that deserves so much more attention and praise than it gets. It’s humble towards its origins while still standing as an action-packed military vs. monster disaster movie, marinated in Gareth Edwards’ overwhelming filmmaking methods. The angels of death emerge; infesting the sky and the ground beneath it, and the ants slot together in order to finally face a gargantuan threat, but the difference in size between monster and man is what makes this movie so special. Edwards truly understands how to conduct suspense in the most Spielbergian way, prioritizing handheld camerawork to let us fill in the gaps as if we’re dumped straight in the middle of each catastrophic event like a rag-doll. The idea of Godzilla becomes more inflicting than the sight of him — but when we do get to see and hear him in full, it’s worth every second of the wait.
