Scream
Scream 7 will be released in two weeks so I was obviously going to watch the whole franchise all over again, so here I am.
What is else to say about Scream ? It is perfection, slashers never been the same since Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson worked together to create this piece of Meta horror that redefined the genre rules.
I’d like to talk about the opening alone and how it actually changed the game forever. On its own, it is a masterpiece, a key entrance to the Scream Universe where subversions are settled and expectations off the table. We’ve all been there as a teen, your parents are out for a dinner party and you got the whole house for yourself so you prepare yourself to eat some junk food and watch a movie. It’s dark outside but you don’t really care or maybe you’ve watched too many horror films and you laugh at the irony of the situation. That is Casey Baker, that is why the beginning works so well because it reflects us directly from the beginning, our innocence, our love for horror films.
Then the innocence gets killed in the egg, the phone rings and everything unravels. Among that, one line remains: What is your favorite scary movie ? Once you hear it, you know you're not going to watch a simple slasher. You're being pointed out, you're being played with and we're more than receptive to play back just like Casey is forced to. But the game isn't clear, the good answers don't really save you and the very recognizable blonde face don't seem so out of reach anymore.
That's where the Magic of Scream relies, being able to lure us, mock us with a good amount of cynical humour but never without fear and thrills. Because the realness of the situation always comes back and hits where it hurts. Casey played the game, got tricked and lost, she dies, unable to scream, meters away from her parents and ends up hanged on a branch tree.
You don’t really do better as an opening scene.
The rest is History.
