Ghostbusters
I hadn't seen this movie in years, and I still remember some of the best quotes; I think that's a good sign. This movie has been on my mind for a little bit, and I got off of a tiring catering shift, and so I threw this movie on. I'm glad I did, because these 105 minutes flew by like...that! The writing in this movie is snappy, with every line of dialogue building off the last to great comedic effect. The plot points in this movie are set up effectively, hinting at the stakes while still incorporating hilarious banter between the actors. Everybody was perfectly cast in this movie. Bill Murray as Venkman is perfect, creating a womanizing character who isn't a completely unwatchable piece of shit. Ray is probably my favorite, feeling so sincere with a great sense of childlike wonder. Harold Ramis plays the almost entirely serious Spengler, whose deadpan intelligence creates a great juxtaposition with the other characters; each one of the leads feels different from the others. On this watch, I found myself appreciating the supporting cast way more than I did. Sigourney Weaver is fun, playing up her possession to a hilarious degree. Ernie Hudson's Winston, while underutilized, creates a more grounded character for the gang. Janine is fantastic, Louis Tully is fun, and I honestly got a kick out of Walter Peck; his actor was so good at playing a dickless man. The direction is fun, too, creating a good sense of suspense while not becoming tonally inconsistent. The music, the practical effects, and the environment pulled me into his world, and it goes to show how, with a good vision, anything can succeed. I've heard people say that before, but this movie is lightning in a bottle. With so many different talented comedic actors, writers, Ivan Reitman's direction, and the time period it was released in, this movie is truly special and hard to replicate.
