Barbie
**1️⃣8️⃣MOVIES FOR THE FIRST 18 YEARS OF MY LIFE
——————————————————
Part 1️⃣6️⃣ ~ “Barbie” 🩷🦩🎀🛼👛🐴
Age: 15**
1️⃣6️⃣ This is the 103rd time i watch Barbie. And it’s only been out for 2 years and a month… That’s bow much i love Barbie.
1️⃣6️⃣ Forever my soul movie. I literally LOVE this movie. I want to hug it. It means everything to me. I’ve written like 80 reviews for it, so let’s see how i’ll try to explain how much i love this movie in different words yet again.
1️⃣6️⃣ Soo… i actually almost finished writing this review and then my Letterboxd crashed cuz the review was too long… So i have to write all of that again… It definitely didn’t take me like 40 min the first time…
1️⃣6️⃣ Like everybody else, i was extremely excited for this movie to come out since it was announced. Margot as Barbie? Yes please! And when the first official photos of Margot and Ryan as Barbie and Ken released everybody (including myself) lost their shit. CUZ IT LOOKED SO GOOD.
1️⃣6️⃣ And then the set leakes from LA of the rollerblades outfits, Ken’s scream (which got cut from the film :( ) and “Margot’s breakdown on set” released and AAAA.
1️⃣6️⃣ The soundtrack also got me excited. “Dance the night” ate. However, when i first listened to “Watati” i didn’t love it. And i didn’t get “Barbie world” either, cuz why wasn’t it the original song? So i decided not to listen to any more singles and wait for the movie to come out. And even tho everybody was talking about “I’m just Ken”, i actually haven’t heard it before the film came out. I was excited for Dominic Fike’s song tho :))
1️⃣6️⃣ The last couple of days before the last artist announcement were so intense, cuz i hoped it would be Gaga, since Mark Ronson produced the album, but it ended up being Sam Smith… (i do like “Man i am” tho)
1️⃣6️⃣ I did love the trailer tho, cuz it was fun and it didn’t show what the movie was actually about (Marvel, take notes!!). And i loved all the movies referenced in the trailer (and there were more in the actual movie). I actually watched 2001 for this film (and The Dark Knight for Oppenheimer).
1️⃣6️⃣ Let’s clearify something, i’ve never seen the animated movies. Why? Cuz i’m a boy and they’re “for girls”. Even if we have one of the early movies on DVD (i think it’s the nutcracker one), i wasn’t allowed to watch it. I did however watch one of the mermaid ones on TV when i was little and one of the more recent ones a couple of years later (still in TV). After seeing Barbie (2023) i planned to watch all the animated ones, but i haven’t gotten to it yet :( I did see the high school one on TV some months ago tho.
1️⃣6️⃣ I had to get pink clothes for opening night. I didn’t own any before cuz i’m a guy (spoiler alert: now half my closet is pink), so went shopping. Finding a pink tshirt was easy (i asked a girl friend to buy it for me cuz i was scared…), pants were the problem. At first i settled for some pink shorts i bought in June from the men section, but a couple of days before the movie came out i decided i wasn’t satisfied with them so i went shopping again and bought some bright pink pants from the women section.
1️⃣6️⃣ However, i didn’t go full pink on opening night. I went with pink tshirt and white pants for Barbenheimer. White pants aren’t really Oppenheimer, but all pink was too much Barbie, and i couldn’t change outfits before movie, and i didn’t want it to look weird either. (I did wear black boots and a Heath’s Joker necklace for Oppenheimer tho).
1️⃣6️⃣ I actually planned to go to one of the Europe cast premieres of the movie… but then the strike started. The Berlin Barbie premiere will forever be my “she got away”.
1️⃣6️⃣ Barbenheimer was the cinematic event of the decade and nothing will ever be able to top it! I was going to watch Oppenheimer anyway, for the director and cast, but Barbie is what actually got me excited for it. Cuz cmon, Barbenheimer was perfection
1️⃣6️⃣ Opening night was everything. Sold out cinema. Pink outfits. Everyone was excited for it. I went alone and had the time of my life. I loved it and was so surprised that it wasn’t the childish pink bubble movie we all expected it to be. Ofc i can’t talk about the opening night without mentioning the heterosexual couple that sat next to me and how the man made stupid remarks at every joke that was about him.
1️⃣6️⃣ I planned to see it multiple times in theaters from the beginning. I already had multiple tickets before it even came out. The next day i went to see it with my mom (and later with multiple women who raised me which is whom this movie should be watched with!!) and after that with my friends etc etc. But i actuallt went to see it more times than i planner cuz it was so intoxicating. *I ENDED UP WATCHING BARBIE* IN CINEMAS 35 TIMES…
1️⃣6️⃣ **The first 10 days i went every single day. I couldn’t stop going to the theater to see it. On the 11th day i had to stop going to it cuz i left on holiday for 3 weeks. But when i came back i went back in cinemas and saw it multiple times again :D
1️⃣6️⃣ I even planned to watch it with my father at some point, but he already hated the idea of the film based on what he read online (he’s a man…) and because i went to see it so many times dressed in pink and i abandoned the idea. It would be interesting to watch it with him some day tho.
1️⃣6️⃣ I’ve seen this in cinemas so many times rhat the lady selling tickets asked me if i was gay. And a guy working at another cinema asked me how many times i’ve seen it.
1️⃣6️⃣ Barbie was what Multiverse of Madness should’ve been (iykyk).
1️⃣6️⃣ My grandma actually judged me so much for liking a “girl movie” for like two months, and then she went to see it herself and she apologized :))
1️⃣6️⃣ The story, the message, the characters, the songs, the production, everything about this movie is incredible. My first couple of reviews are about how much i love the characters AND I STAND BY THAT! Every single character in this film means so much to me. There isn’t any character that i don’t like. Perfect casting!
1️⃣6️⃣ Even tho i LOVE Barbie sm (she’s one of my fav fictional characters), ALLAN stole my heart from the beginning. Cuz i saw myself in him. He’s a girl’s guy. I saw somone on tiktok say he was so close to the girls, yet not as close as they were to each other. And i felt that. Allan, you will forver live in my heart. Live, laugh, love Michael Cera.
1️⃣6️⃣ I also love that Greta directed this. Unpopular opinion!: i’m not the biggest Little Women fan, but i do like Ladybird. And i couldn’t have asked for a better director for Barbie.
1️⃣6️⃣ The dance scene and the WWIMF scene were instand favs of mine. I remember watchinf the dance scene for the first time in theaters and being in awe. I told myself that’s the best dance scene in cinema history. But ofc the void scene is… everything. Perfectly captures what life feels like. What it means to be human and why you should love it. And after 2 years, i reached Barbie’s point of view too, and i love both the ups and lows of my life and don’t want to live in Barbieland anymore (the final part is a lie).
1️⃣6️⃣ The next couple of days after i first saw the film i learned the “Dance the night” choreo and then in time the “I’m just Ken” one.
1️⃣6️⃣ I needed to have the poster for this film, so i went to my local street cinema to ask for one, but they didn’t have any extra ones left. But i went to ask again a month later and they said they’ll give me the one they have on display once they won’t show the movie anymore. (Unfortunately, i never put the poster up in my room cuz i don’t have that much wall space, but once i’ll live in a mansion it will have its own frame).
1️⃣6️⃣ I got so much Barbie movie merch that summer. Love you Primark. The rollerblades Ken shirt is my fav. I still have the label in my phonecase. (However, when i first bought a Barbie shirt i had to pretend it was for a girl friend).
1️⃣6️⃣ Speaking of clothes, the second i came out of the cinema hall (for the first time) i knew i needed the “I am Kenough” hoodie, but it was sold out. They did restock it the next day tho so i immediately ordered it.
1️⃣6️⃣ I also ordered Allan’s shirt at some point, but Mattel cancelled my order :((
1️⃣6️⃣ Y’all don’t understand how much this movie allowed me to express myself and be myself. The summer of 23 was the summer of freedom. When i realized i wasn’t a kid controled by “boys stuff” anymore and i could dress in pink and go take photos in the Barbie doll box they had at the cinema. And even tho i was assaulted in the street multiple times for wearing pink, i didn’t care (after i safely got home). Now pink is my favorite color, and everybody knows that. I said back then that i will wear a pink suit at prom and i still plan on doing that.
1️⃣6️⃣ For my 16th bday (which was <2 months after the movie came out), i bought myself my first Barbie doll. It’s the pink dress Barbie from the beginning of the movie. I love her so much, she’s one of my horcruxes for sure.
1️⃣6️⃣ Actually, my whole 16th bday party was Barbie themed (cake, outfits, everything).
1️⃣6️⃣ And then for the one year anniversary i bought the skating Barbie and Ken dolls.
1️⃣6️⃣ IT’S BEEN OVER TWO YEARS AND THERE’S STILL NO ALLAN DOLL?? MATTEL?!?! There’s a movie Sugar Daddy Ken doll but no movie Allan?? I did get the 60 year anniversary Allan doll they released (and a Barbie membership or whatever that was that you had to get to buy the doll), but i want a movie Allan. Don’t piss me off any more and release one for the 3 year anniversary!!!
1️⃣6️⃣ The Barbie movie funko collection is one of the two funko collections i want to fully complete (the other being the Wanda collection). However, i don’t have the skating Barbie and Ken funkos cuz NOTHING ships to my country…
1️⃣6️⃣ You bet i bought the script the second it released and read it like 3 times since then. Even tho i already knew it by heart before the official book came out.
1️⃣6️⃣ The soundtrack also reminds me of that summer so much. “Choose your fighter” was an instand favorite, but the most nostalgic song i have to say is “Speed drive”.
1️⃣6️⃣ After so many rewatched, it doesn’t feel like watching a movie anymore. I already know every scene by heart (visually, audibly etc), that it’s more of an exeprience than a movie. A nostalgic experience.
1️⃣6️⃣ I’ll forever live in the summer of 23. If you read any of my previous reviews from this list, you know how much that year ment to me. In the summer of 2023: i saw Johnny Depp live (my chialdhood favorite actor), i saw Indiana Jones 5 in theaters (one of my fav franchises), Barbie came out, i rewatched all the Disney movies (literally the representation of my childhood) etc. I’ve also visited NYC (my fav city) that summer. And at the beginning of the year i met Lizzie Olsen (who plays my fav fictional character oat). And there are many more reasons that make 2023 my favorite year <33
1️⃣6️⃣ I actually built Barbie’s house in minecraft before the movie came out (from the trailer footage). And after the film got released i rebuilt it and started building all of Barbieland. Fast forward two years, i managed to build the “Barbie” from the “Barbieland” neighborhood. So i have half the neighborhood and the downtown left :DD
1️⃣6️⃣ The award season didn’t eat that much… WHY WAS THIS MOVIE ROBBED SO MUCH? Costume design? Best soundtrack? Margot and Greta nominations?!?! However, the “I’m just Ken” performance at the Oscars ate. Tho it was sad to think that was the night the Barbie era would end. I didn’t really leave that era though… I will never truly leave it.
1️⃣6️⃣ Watching Ryan’s first movie post Barbie (Fall Guy) felt a bit weird, cause that means he moved on, the era is over. And now in a couple of months Margot’s next project comes out (A Big Bold Beautiful Journey), and she spoke about Barbie during the press tour and omg :,)
1️⃣6️⃣ I actually missed the last day Barbie was in theaters. By the end of september 2023 there was only one cinema in my city that still screened the movie, and it was only on weekends. And ofc i went at every screening (one on saturday, one on sunday). But for its last ever weekend in theaters i couldn’t go that sunday (i went on saturday don’t worry), cuz i went to a friend’s party. And since then i wish i could see it on the big screen one more time.
1️⃣6️⃣ When the movie concert tour was first announced (only in the usa), i wrote to the sinfonietta on insta to ask if they’ll come to europe too. And they replied that they’ll release more tour dates later. Flash forward a year and they announced they’ll come to MY CITY. I was in so much shock. I bought a ticket immediately. I was supper excited to see it on the big screen again, dress in pink again and relive the summer of 23 for one night. And then… the show was canceled… I’m sorry, it wasn’t canceled, “it will be rescheduled”. This was like 3 months ago and no new date yet…
1️⃣6️⃣ Fun fact: that wasn’t the only time i wrote to an official account on instagram related to the Barbie movie. I first wrote to warnerbrosde to ask about the movie premiere in Berlin (cuz i wasn’t sure if regular people can attend, i was uneducated at the time), and they said you can attend if tou win a Barbie fashion contest on insta… (but they ment attend attend like on the pink carpet, not in the audience, and so my hopes for attending got really low). And the second time i wrote to Mattel (on their website i think), to ask for a movie Allan doll (yes, i’m so fucking serious about this, i want that doll!), but then they wanted me to complete a form and stuff and i got bored so i didn’t (and bc of that i think my message wasn’t sent, idk).
1️⃣6️⃣ I told myself i’ll stop rewatching Barbie as much as before after the 100th watch, and now that i also rewatched it for this list it’s time to say goodbye to it for a while. It will feel weird, cuz since July 2023 i’ve seen it AT LEAST once a month (this happened during like 4 months cuz i was very busy). At the end of spring this year i actually watched it twice a week for over a month. So not watching it for a while will be a weird change. BUT the next time i’ll watch it will be special cuz my local street cinema will have a screening of it in 2 months and i can’t wait!! I’ e been waiting for them to show Barbie since forever (cuz they always have rereleases of popular movies from throught the decades). I’ll finally see it on the big screen again :))
1️⃣6️⃣ Speaking of the 100th rewatch, in honor of that milestone I MADE A BARBIE MOVIE IMPOSSIBLE QUIZ that you can take at this link:

1️⃣6️⃣ Everybody who knows me knows how much i love Barbie. How much i love pink. How much this era means to me.
1️⃣6️⃣ I also have this “tradition” of taking a photo of the title card at the end of the movie after every rewatch. So yes, i have an album in my camera roll with 103 photos of that title card.
1️⃣6️⃣ Nothing can ever get between me and the bond i have with this movie💖
