DogvilleRobyn8.0· September 22, 2024Followwith Dogme-95, Lars Von Trier proved you don’t need expensive cameras and stunning visuals to make a good film and he helped make film making available to anyone with a camera. with Dogville he proves you don’t even need a set. i think the filmed aimed to convey two things. 1. that to make a good film, all that’s needed is a good script and good actors. 2. how women are treated both back then and still today. Grace is treated terribly. the people want her gone, then they want her because she does jobs for them that don’t even need doing. the people never wanted her there, but as soon as she escapes they want her back because of the pointless jobs she does. not only that but they use her as a sex object. the men walk in, have sex with her and the people celebrate by ringing the bell. the chains represent the world the men of Dogville have trapped her in (physically and mentally) and the lack of set shows her life is never private. there’s to walls to stop anyone from seeing her at anytime. and at the end, she blames herself. she says she can only “look forward” and she just has to act like nothing bad ever happened to her.we, as good people, are meant to act like revenge is wrong. but i think the people deserved it. why aren’t we at the point in society where only the bad are punished? anti-abortion laws and laws preventing trans people from getting therapy? whilst many rapists walk free or are given shorter sentences then petty crime? the world we live in is cruel and unjust. i hope one day everyone can just live as who they are without larger punishments then rapists.CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the appSee all Robyn's reviews for Dogville (2)First watch8.0September 22, 2024Rewatch 19.9December 29, 2024
