Dogville
“You can have me if you want me”
I find it tragic that so many men see women as only a means of sex. And how sex for men is seen as an achievement, but for women something to be ashamed of. Men are called players whilst women are diminished to ‘sluts’. Despite being asexual, I can still see sex as something beautiful. Many would argue it is the highest form of intimacy and I would probably agree. I wish we could live in a world where everyone else can see it as intimacy and not something to chase after.
Dogville is one of the most powerful films i’ve ever seen. Lars Von Treir has yet to disappoint me with impact. The themes are still extremely relevant, if not more, almost 22 years later. Slowly you see the town’s people show who they really are. And by the end you are completely on Grace’s side. For me the most powerful line of the film comes towards the end. After living in this town for 3 hours, it suddenly clicks as to why it is called Dogville.
“I call them dogs”
Theres just something so impact about that line for me. It holds an incredible amount of weight and hit me like a ton of bricks. I think I missed a lot on my first watch because I was interrupted so many times. But now I see the film for what it truly is. A masterpiece. I wish i could see this for the first time again and truly feel the impact of that ending.
