Interstellar
Well we used to look up and the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.
I never saw Interstellar when it first released but I remember the consensus being a mixed bag when it premiered almost a decade ago after Nolan was red hot off the Dark Knight trilogy. Time has treated Interstellar very well with a majority picking it as their favorite Nolan movie. Sadly it now has this reputation of a “basic film bro” movie that you cannot escape from which makes it an enemy to pretentious letterboxd users (it’s why I’m afraid of putting it in my top 4). Well as an annoying Nolan junkie myself I’ve always been jealous of those who have seen Interstellar on the big screen. Glad I finally got around to it.
I’ll get over the basics first. Yes it’s no surprise that it looks and sounds good. The silent sequences when you’re outside in deep cold space and all you can hear is the 70mm film projector cranking is a really cool feeling. Out of all the modern Nolan movies I think this has the least amount of times where the sound mixing is weird but idk this print at least had really great sound. Of course there’s some very loud moments like the wormhole and sandstorm and of course Zimmer’s score. His score is what space sounds like to me.
I hope Nolan delves into more space flicks in the future. I love his grounded approach but whenever there’s a sci-fi twist like inception, tenet, and the prestige it’s bread and butter for him. I think that’s why when it first released people felt iffy about the last 15 minutes. It’s unusual seeing something that wacky for Nolan. It’s different for Nolan to have more than serious and urgency as emotions in his movies and tackle family and love. It’s still the most emotional Nolan movie and it’s not close. My guess is that it had to do with Johnny Nolan working on the script too. There’s still plenty of seriousness and urgency in interstellar and classic dry humor with the sassy robots. It’s sad that we will never get better characters in a Nolan movie because of TARS and CASE existing.
It’s not possible.
No. It’s necessary. 🥶
