“Cause she's got a great ass!... and you got your head all the way up it! “
I watched Heat for the first time about 5 months ago, and this time around it earned it’s 5 stars.
Pacino and DeNiro are absolutely at peak performance here; I still think this film would be great without them, but it would not be the certified classic that it is without them elevating this script and everyone around them. Pacino’s Detective Hanna and De Niro’s McCauley are both great characters in their own right, but they also represent two sides of the same coin. This is a great heist thriller, but above all it’s a phenomenal character study.
This is still the best Michael Mann film I’ve seen, and he’s firing on all cylinders here. There are phenomenal action sequences, specifically some of the best shootout scenes I’ve seen period. The opening heist and the final heist rightfully being the highlights. The cinematography is stunning, my favorite part being how the car chase scene is shot. That’s what I think of when I think of a Mann film. This movie is dialogue heavy, but that’s okay because it’s some of the best written dialogue in a crime movie with incredible delivery from legends. There are so many quotable lines and memorable conversations, so I picked my favorite comedic line for the header. For a nearly 3 hour movie, it doesn’t waste a single second of its runtime, and it’s fairly brisk once you leave the first act.
I just simply couldn’t deny it the 5 stars this time around, I just don’t have any complaints. The ending ties everything up nicely and gives us a satisfying conclusion.
Edit: This might make my Top 25…
