Shutter Island

“My name is Andrew Laedis, and I murdered my wife in the spring of ‘52”.
Journey To My Top 25: I knew this would be here, but the question was how high?
Shutter Island has everything going for it in my book: cinematography 101 to my novice eye, my favorite Leo performance of all time, some of the most subtle double entendres of all time, and it functions excellently as both a psychological thriller and a mystery.
The excellence of this film lies in the intricately placed details from Scorsese. Every frame and word of dialogue is intentional and useful. It’s got a great performance from Leo; Not only does he mail the deranged and dramatic bits, but he really makes you wanna believe Teddy at the end. I really love some of the other performances as well, mainly Ruffalo and Kingsley. I love the way the visions/flashbacks are scattered into the film— slowly untangling our mystery, but the movie never spells out what’s going on for you until the very end. I also adore the score. It’s truly chilling and encapsulates “Shutter Island” perfectly, making the island itself feel like a character—which is also aided by the excellent cinematography. It’s full of so many great shots, close-ups, and haunting imagery that leaves a lasting impression.
oh no I’m rambling again; this might make top 4…
