Carol
this was my third time watching "carol" and too be quite honest: it didn't feel like i watching it for the third time. i felt like i was watching for the first time. it was like biting into a piece of mint gum and the strong flavor mint hits your taste buds and it's just a fresh taste. that is what "carol" feels to me with every watch.
even on round three with this masterpiece, i still have so much to say about this. even though it's a gay film, it did not feel like a gay film at all. it felt like two people who fell in love at first sight, who wanted to be together so bad, but couldn't because of society at the time. most of LGBTQ+ are usually sold for people who are LGBTQ+. while you're watching that usual LGBTQ+, you are like "oh, this is a gay film." i did not feel that way at all with "carol".
todd haynes really knew what he wanted to make when it came to this fantastic script. he showed that by how this how movie was shot. the cinematography was just insanely good. some of the shots, for instance, towards the end with therese at the party. you see two windows with therese at one window, and a party happening at the other window. i thought this was really clever way in saying that that was not what therese wanted to be apart of. she wanted to be apart of carol's life. thoroughout the movie, there are many shots just like that one that blew me the way. haynes also really knows how to tell a story visually. todd haynes doesn't come out and tell you that it is set in the 1950, you see that with visual context clues (i.e: hairstyles, vechiles, smoking in restaurants, people's reactions when talking about gay things.) we are never told about the history behind abby and carol's relationship. through facial reactions and body language, we know that something happened between them until we are told at a later time.
i can't see anyone else playing carol and therese better than cate blanchett and rooney mara. cate blanchett plays elegant housewife so fucking well that it makes me sick. rooney mara was just the fucking perfect choice to play the mouse-y, brunette girl who falls in love with this older and more sophisticated woman in a department store. i know that neither of them are going to win the oscar (but i am still rooting for them with all my heart) but they were so perfect together.
unrelated to the film itself: this movie was ROBBED. this should have been nominated for best picture. out of all of those movies nominated, "carol" is one of the best, if not the fucking best. you can't beat this movie. i just can't believe "the big short" and "spotlight" were nominated (AND COULD POSSIBLY WIN???) over this fucking classic and iconic film. like fuck. maybe rooney was right. maybe if the gun went off this would've gotten a best picture nom.
one more thing. i fucking hate men. and i love being an emotional wreck. while watching this, i made a whole pizza so i could soak my feelings because i didn't want to feel them anymore.
and yes i will log this movie EVERY TIME i rewatch it.
